 Human trafficking is an issue that impacts the most vulnerable in our society, in this case: the foster care system. 

According to the Child Welfare Information Gateway, approximately half a million youth in the United States experience foster care placement each year. The risk of trafficking increases when an individual runs away from a foster care placement, and youth who have experienced trafficking are grossly overrepresented by those in the child welfare system.

The Dressember Network provides vital research and resources to the anti-trafficking movement and also supports prevention programs among vulnerable youth in the U.S. and beyond. By giving to Dressember, you help provide training and support to prevent children from becoming victims in the first place. The Dressember Network is working to prevent exploitation in supply chains and educate the public on conscious consumerism to reduce the demand for products and services made by forced labor.

According to the Global Slavery Index, 71% of human trafficking victims are women and girls. The same report indicates that women and girls account for 99% of victims of forced labor in the commercial sex industry, 58% in other sectors such as domestic work, 40% of victims of forced labor imposed by state authorities, and 84% of victims of forced marriage.

Criminal records hold survivors back, impacting their ability to obtain employment, housing, custody of their children, pursue education, benefits and financial assistance, immigration relief, or adjustment of status and family stability. A criminal record also acts as a constant reminder of their trafficking experience and confronting that can cause retraumatization. Survivors are routinely burdened with numerous records in multiple jurisdictions, requiring a comprehensive national approach to ensure that survivors have access to the full range of relief in a trauma-informed and strategic way.
